Description

Sands of Time Shiraz is our premium Shiraz sourced from a single vineyard on the deep sand slopes of our McLaren Vale Hastwell & Lightfoot estate.

Over millennia the prevailing westerly winds slowly built a mantle of coastal sand across our region, drifting into the valleys and building up on the ridges turning them into dunes. Now we are 10 kilometres from the coast.

These sands, over time have become the primary influence in the style of our wines. There is a finesse, an elegance and balance of flavours that sets the Semaphore Sands vineyards apart from much of the region.

The Sands of Time Single Vineyard Shiraz is a reflection of its source, with small batch fermentation and a judicious use of oak.

When it comes to food it will marry delightfully with saltbush fed lamb, slow-cooked in the oven.

A wine made for eating.

  1. QWine Reviews

Cloves, chocolate and touches of fennel conspire with dark berry and plum fruit. It’s quite a relaxed wine to taste – it’s not angling for a particular personae, just one which merely feels happy in its own skin. That chocolatey goodness sits at the core with some earthiness late. All up, it’s a solid Shiraz. Drink now to ten years.
    91/100 Points from QWineReviews.com

  2. Andrew Graham, Australian Wine Review

…The flavours are at the riper end but it’s plush enough to carry it off, if a little tart. I like the savoury edges – hints of tobacco too. Good, solid wine. Best drinking: Good now, better in 2 years, will drink well for at least fifteen years.
    17.5/20 & 91/100 Points from ozwinereview.com

  3. Gilbert Labour, The Grape Hunter

This flagship single vineyard Shiraz from the Hastwell & Lightfoot team admirably reflects its regionality and pedigree…
    Review from TheGrapeHunter.com

  4. Tony Peters, Words from a Wine Glass

“High percentage cocoa dark chocolate, dark berries, a ripe juicy plummy medium weight palate that sits for a moment on the taste buds before trailing off. The tannins are evident but by no means intrusive. There is a sense of elegance about this wine thanks to some very well executed oak that seems to be creamy/vanilla in character… Even though it is nicely balanced and so approachable now, this has cellarability for sure and at the price, you can have the best of both worlds!
    Review from WordsfromaWineGlass.com

  5. John Lewis, Newcastle Herald

…deep purple hues and mocha coffee aromas. The front palate shows ripe juicy plum flavour, the middle palate dried cranberry, licorice, peppermint chocolate and savoury oak and the finish chalky tannins.
    4.5 out of 5 Stars from NewcastleHerald.com.au

  6. Patrick Eckel, Wine Reviewer

… The palate shows a wine that is screaming for time in the cellar, it has an enjoyable and well proportioned palate that has a savoury, almost herbaceous side before it’s pulled through by dense dark berry fruits and characteristic McLaren Vale dark chocolate notes to finish. Will certainly reward time.”
    90/100 Points from WineReviewer.com.au

  7. Regan Drew, VinoNotebook

“…Dusty, chalky, the aromas run from pure plum, blood orange to easter egg chocolate. Medium full, with sandy meshy tannins and plenty of blue/black fruit…
    17/20 Points from VinoNotebook.com
